A Series of Good Choices, Nick's Fairdale Weekender.
Nick’s Fairdale Weekender has been a slow but steady evolution. He first picked up this bike completely stock from us in May of 2016. First, it saw duty as a child carrier with a baby seat mounted. On nice days he would return to the shop from his house nearby to grab a few items while bringing his child along for the ride. Eventually, the child seat came off and Nick the bike was seeing more and more use beyond trips around the neighborhood.
For its relatively small size, Richmond is packed with places to ride especially if one has a bike that’s at home moving from pavement to dirt without compromise. After seeing some of the recent builds and employee bikes that utilized 650b wheels and dynamo lights, he decided it was time to make some upgrades.
We built a new set of wheels switching from the larger 700c rim to a somewhat smaller 650b rim that allowed for a larger, more comfortable and faster rolling tire. He also took advantage of tubeless tire tech when we used a TCS or “Tubeless Compatible System” rim and tire from WTB. The best part was also foregoing a standard front hub for a dynamo.
After the wheels were built and tires mounted we wired up an IQ-x headlight and Secula taillight from Busch & Muller to the front and rear racks he had previously added.
These changes not only seriously up Nick’s pleasure riding game but elevate his Fairdale from its humble beginnings to bonafide super-commuter / touring bike status.
