Bicycle Service Policy

Outpost Richmond Bicycle Service Policy.

In order to best serve our customers, we have the following policies regarding bicycle repair.

E-assist bikes.

At Outpost Richmond we service many makes and models of e-assist bikes but there are also many exceptions.  Please read carefully if your bike is electric assist.

Motor system brands.

If your bike is equipped with a Shimano Steps or Bosch motor-system we offer full repair and support services. If your e-assist bike is equipped with ANY wheel/hub-drive motor system please read below carefully.

We do not work on many brands that utilize a wheel/hub-drive motor system.  With a few specific exceptions, we do not work on ANY e-assist bike of this type that utilizes a throttle system.  Please see our approved brand list below to see if your bike is on it.

We do recommend that if your bike is not on the list you contact us for confirmation but please understand that service to most e-assist bikes with a throttle will be refused.

Regarding wheel/hub-drive motor systems and flat tires.

If your e-assist bike uses a motor in the rear wheel/hub it is important to know that replacing a tube or tire is a much more complex/time-consuming process compared to a standard bicycle.  As a result, labor associated with this will be billed at a higher rate.  The base price for tube replacement is $50.   We always recommend contacting our service department via text before bringing your e-assist bike in for this service.

Regarding electrical work vs standard service work.

All standard bicycle maintenance to an e-assist bike will typically be billed at standard rates with the exception of those that require the removal of the rear wheel.  If your e-assist bike is having an electrical issue and is on our approved brand list we will work on it.  Diagnostic is $100/hr (1 hour minimum).  Service work is also billed at $100/hr and may include time to source parts from the manufacturer.  We will always try to provide updates as we go, but given the complex nature of many of these repairs we are unable to give specific estimates.

Approved brands:

  • All Bosch-equipped bikes
  • All Shimano Steps-equipped bikes
  • All Fauza-equipped bikes
  • Rad Power Bikes
  • Charge
  • Marin
  • Aventon
  • Linus
  • Priority

Direct to consumer and similar brands.

Due to frequent issues with many bicycles sold through these (and similar channels), we do not perform maintenance or assembly.

This includes bicycles sold through Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, and similar channels. If you are unsure if we service your brand, please contact us in advance for approval as any bike in the above categories will be refused.

“Vintage” bicycles.

While we do sometimes make exceptions, we generally do not service bicycles manufactured before 1990.  In our experience, most bicycles from before this time reach the end of their reasonable service life.  This is especially true of all classic “10-speed” bikes from the 70s and the vast majority of bicycles from Schwinn.

Pick up for all services.

Regardless of the type of service, ALL bicycles must be picked up within 48 hours of completion unless a specific exception has been made at the time of drop off.  Any bicycle left longer than 5 days will be assessed a storage fee of $100 per week.

Warranty on workmanship.

We guarantee all workmanship on bicycles we repair for 30 days after pickup.  If you encounter any issues with the work it is your responsibility to inform us within this time frame.  The warranty does not cover flat tires or any issues with the bike that are not directly related to the services rendered.
