Staff Bikes; Jack's Endpoint Hunter Gatherer

Words: Braden Govoni Photographs: James Wainscott

One thing you should know about our guy Jack is that his father is from Australia.

But one other, more important thing you should know is that he’s got a thing for vintage steel 26” wheeled bikes. When he was finally ready to make the leap into the early 21st century and get a bike with disc brakes you know he was going to go with something that pays homage to the bikes of the past he loves so much.

Are 27.5 wheels bigger than 26? Well yeah. But the dirty secret is that they are not halfway between 29 and 26. In fact, 27.5 is only 39.68% more than 26 in bike math (and bike math is dumb).

But I digress. The Hunter-Gatherer accomplishes exactly what he wanted.

Steel frame? Check Disc brakes? Yup. Thru-axles? Uh-huh.Modern geometry optimized for underbiking(TM)? You bet. And let’s not forget that Rodeo Labs carbon fork.

Since building up this majestic machine, Jack has been crushing all sorts of rides on it.

Thanks to ample mounting points and room for large mixed-surface tires, backpacking trips have been handled with confidence. Thanks to the sporty geometry that Endpoint frames are known for, this bike is also right at home on a zesty Bikebuds group ride. And of course, it’s his go-to for commuting to work.

The build is a well-thought-out mix of parts, with durability and versatility given equal attention. The wide range of gearing, with a 46x11 top end and 30x46 for the low, means he can get where he needs to go.

The standout choice has to be the Continental rubber.

The mix of Cross King front and Race King rear brings the “business in the front, party in the back” mentality truly to life.
