Three Years of Bikes, Food, Beer & Wine, and...

Outpost Richmond Three Year Anniversary

In 2015 I started with a simple enough idea. I wanted to take the conventional idea of the bicycle shop and scrap it.

After years of working in shops, I knew that bike shops could be intimidating, especially for riders who were not indoctrinated into the so-called “cycling culture”. I wanted to make a shop for people of all types who shared a common love of riding.

At first, the vision was much smaller, literally.  I envisioned a little service shop but with a twist. I realized that if you’re dropping off or picking up a bike for service, it would be pretty convenient to be able to grab some basic food items on the way home or to work. Inspired by the really great local market that Erin was developing in Bellevue with Little House Green Grocery, I had a plan in mind. I reached out to a few friends, and as would luck would have it, they thought it was a great idea too.

From there the idea quickly grew from a small repair shop with a few staple food and beverage items. We knew we wanted to be in the Forest Hill Area. As avid outdoorsy types, we were all big fans of the James River Park System and couldn’t think of a better place to try our idea out.

Three years later things have grown a lot from that original idea. Outpost Richmond employs a staff of 7 and along the way has managed to get voted into some pretty prestigious company by Style and Richmond Magazine. We have been exceptionally fortunate to have the absolute best customers around.
Outpost Richmond Three Year Anniversary
When I first started working in a bicycle shop 17 years ago, my 24-year-old self would have never imagined this is where I would be. But I couldn’t be happier with having started Richmond’s (and possibly the country’s only) bike shop - market - beer & wine seller.

It’s been a strange journey and there has been a lot of hard work along the way, but it’s been a fun one.  We still have much more to do and I can promise that the next three years are going to bring more convenience to our customers and some surprises yet to come.

Thanks to everyone who has supported Outpost Richmond so far!
